Energy Management Collaborative (EMC) today announced that J. Reid Porter was selected as a 2016 Marvelous Mentor by Twin Cities Business Magazine. Porter is an EMC board member and the retired former CEO of Navarre Corp and CFO of IMC Global. He and the following fellow mentors were recognized at an awards ceremony held Wednesday, August 17, at the Nicollet Island Pavilion in Minneapolis:

  • Ann H. Barkelew, founding general manager of FleishmanHillard Minnesota
  • Pam Borton, senior executive coach and consultant of Borton Partners
  • Sandra Davis, chair and founder of MDA Leadership Consulting
  • Timothy Walsh, senior partner of McKinsey & Company

  • The Twin Cities Business Magazine Marvelous Mentors award recognizes the accomplishments of Minnesota business leaders who inspire and provide guidance, ideas and a sounding board for mentees who have successfully advanced to C-suite or chairman of the board positions at organizations that are significant in size, growth rate or industry position.

Porter was nominated for the award by EMC CEO Jerry Johnson, who first worked with him at Cummins Power Generation. "After receiving my master’s degree at Stanford, Reid created a role for me at Cummins that cultivated my capabilities as the leader of a P&L based organization," said Johnson.

As Porter’s mentee, Johnson turned around a struggling business within the company, eventually growing it into a $900 million operation. He went on to become CEO of Datacard Group (now Entrust Datacard) and in 2003 co-founded EMC.

"Without Reid’s mentorship, I’m not sure I would've had the confidence to embark on building a business of my own here in Minnesota, one that is on the verge of exceeding $100 million in sales this year," Johnson reflected.

The event, which was hosted by Twin Cities Business Magazine Editor in Chief Dale Kurschner and featured keynote speaker Brian Abraham of the University of St. Thomas, Opus College of Business, provided the more than 200 attendees with a variety of insights on the value of mentoring.
