Improving Lighting Efficiency Across a 430K sq. ft. Medical Center

St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California, is part of CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States. As part of a broader effort to improve energy efficiency across its facilities, CommonSpirit Health partnered with Earth Savers Energy Services, a subsidiary of EMC, to complete a comprehensive lighting retrofit at the 430,000 square-foot medical center.

The Challenge

Operating around the clock, St. Joseph’s required reliable lighting throughout patient rooms, nurse stations, offices, utility areas and other spaces. The existing system included traditional troffer fixtures and CFL lamps that consumed more energy and offered limited ability to adjust lighting based on occupancy.

The goal was to reduce energy consumption while maintaining consistent, comfortable illumination throughout the medical center.

The Solution

The project team retrofitted existing troffer lighting with programmable LED fixtures featuring integrated dimming and occupancy sensors. The sensors automatically provided appropriate illumination when spaces were occupied and dimmed fixtures when areas became unoccupied, reducing unnecessary energy use.

CFL lamps in patient restrooms, elevators, closets and cabinets were also replaced with LED plug-in lamps, improving efficiency while providing a more uniform lighting experience across the facility.

The Results

By combining energy-efficient LED technology with intelligent lighting controls, St. Joseph’s reduced its annual lighting energy consumption by more than 40%.

The project delivered 1,987,801 kWh in annual energy savings, resulting in approximately $481,832 in annual energy cost savings.
